Personal finances - an overview of our recent webinars with Tilney

By Naresh Aggarwal, Associate Director, Policy and Technical, ACT

In 2021 the ACT partnered with the wealth management company – Tilney to look at how risk management differed from a corporate and a personal perspective and also to update the treasury community on a number of key areas of personal financial management. It was clear from the feedback that many treasurers spend too long managing their corporate risks and not enough time planning their own financial affairs.

The results of the survey can be found here.

Over the year we produced three webinars covering investments, estate planning and retirement.

1.    The first was held towards the end of March and provided ideas on what to do before the end of the current tax year. It included:

  • How to make the most of your allowances ahead of tax year end and against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic
  • The importance of pensions and protection to a financial plan and financial wellbeing
  • Investing, investment risk and the importance of asset allocation to investing for the long term

This webinar can be viewed here.

2.    In July we focused on estate planning and tacked the following areas:

  • A systematic approach to mitigating inheritance tax
  • How to maximise savings while minimising the loss of access to your investments
  • Using wills to make the best use of the allowances available
  • The pros and cons of using trusts
  • Using pensions to pass on wealth

This webinar can be viewed here.

3.    In October we looked at cashflow modelling and scenario planning for retirement:

  • The importance of financial planning in defining your retirement goals and objectives
  • The benefits of building a robust retirement cashflow plan
  • Examples of cashflow modelling that show how your future might look
  • Annual and lifetime pension allowances
  • Saving and investing for retirement
  • At retirement options and phased retirement
  • Managing investment risk when approaching/at retirement

We had a lot of interest in each of these webinars. Tilney has provided answers to the many questions asked during the final webinar on retirement, which we did not get time to respond to. These can be found here.
