I started my career at PwC, and after working in audit for several years I got involved in one of the treasury specialists’ team. The first turning point of my career occurred when I enrolled to study for an ACT qualification. Since then, I have worked in several corporate treasury teams holding positions from Treasury Controller to Treasurer. More recently I moved to Zanders, a treasury consultancy, where I assist treasuries in improving processes, selecting, and implementing new technology.
I love seeing improvements being implemented and that is exactly what working for a consultancy enables me to do.
I really like that the work of treasurers has a visible outcome, which can often be measured. Treasurers are clever and hard working people, your learn a lot from them!
Regulatory and compliance changes (e.g., SWIFT attestation, change in EMIR rules) and disruptive technology (e.g., API, generative AI, machine learning).
That must be the £13bn refinancing and whole business securitisation where I worked on implementing hedge accounting for a portfolio of £9bn interest rate swaps within a complex group structure that included 5 consolidation levels. My other task was to implement compliance with debt covenants and undertakings for this highly leveraged group. In addition, I was responsible for communication with the syndicate members. My learning curve was exponential!
To be grateful. I find it important to find something for which I am grateful every single day.
Webinars and events. They provide good networking opportunities and provide useful insights.
My I-phone: I use it as phone, camera, alarm clock, watch – the list goes on!
Go for it! And, please, try to match it with practical experience in a treasury team.
7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey. It stays relevant, even though it was written so long ago.
